Why use a planet wheel

All eight planets are already on the wheel in order from the Sun, with a rocket for a pointer. Spin to hand out planets for a class project, quiz the class on the one it lands on, or pick tonight’s space fact.

  • Hand out planets for a class project

Teachers can spin a planet for each group and hide each winner, so every planet gets its own poster or model.

  • Quiz the class on the planet it lands on

Spin a planet and ask for its order from the Sun, its size or one fact about it.

  • Pick a space fact for bedtime

Parents can spin a planet at bedtime and share one fact about it before lights out.

  • Spin a planet for a space story

Students can write about landing on the planet the wheel picks and what they would see there.

This wheel wears the Spinterstellar theme: deep space: twinkling stars, a planet hub and a rocket to point. Your own copy keeps it, or pick another wheel theme.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn’t Pluto on the wheel?

Pluto has been classed as a dwarf planet since 2006. Click “Pick your planets” to add it, along with Ceres, Eris or the Moon.

Is the wheel really random?

Yes. Every entry has a slice of the same size, and where the wheel stops is picked with your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), so nobody can predict or rig the result.

Can I change the entries on this wheel?

Yes. Click “Pick your planets” to save your own copy. You can then add, remove or rename entries, change the theme and spin settings, and share or embed your wheel.

Is it free?

Completely free, with no sign-up needed. Create a free account only if you want to keep your wheels together.
